A Legacy for the

Next Generation

Give your family an adventure they can’t find on a screen.

“I’m a parent first, and I want to give our kids a way off the screen and into the story. It’s easy to look at a town and just see pavement and strip malls, but there is a deep-time history here as rich as anywhere else on Earth. I founded these tours to reignite that sense of wonder—because the greatest adventures don't happen behind a glass screen; they happen when we take a step into our own backyard.”

Anthropology & History

of the

Ground Beneath Our Feet

Calabash is a lifelong connection for me.

I’ve been walking these streets since I was a about four or five years old when my family would visit over the summers, but the stories etched into this ground go back centuries.

Did you know that what we now call a quiet coastal town was once the site of the legendary Duel at the Boundary House?

Or that before it was Calabash, it was known as Pea Landing—a vital hub for the region's early trade?

From the star-studded mystery of Jimmy Durante and his famous 'Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash' sign-off to the local whispers of the haunted houses that still stand watch over our streets, this town is a tapestry of folklore and grit.

As the world moves faster and landmarks like Sam Bellamy's Indigo Farms - a century farm that's a landmark of this area dating back to before the Revolutionary War - face the threat of becoming just another highway or strip mall (see their petition linked below!)

I realized that if we don't tell these stories now, they will be paved over forever. We aren't just walking past buildings; we’re walking through a legacy."

This tour is hopefully a first step into seriously securing the history of Calabash, North Carolina.

Who Am I?

I'm Isaac!

To understand why I’m so passionate about the streets of Calabash, you have to understand where it all started. I’m a researcher and a storyteller, but at my core, I’m an anthropologist who believes that history is a living, breathing system we walk through every day.

I’m currently preparing to start my Master’s program at East Carolina University this August, building on the foundation I laid at UNCW. My time as an Education Programmer for the Museum of Coastal Carolina and my work with children’s programs at the Lemon Rose Play Cafe taught me that history shouldn't be boring—it should be an experience.

That mindset comes from a childhood spent as an "Indiana Jones kid." My dad didn't just show me movies; he handed me a compass and a map. I grew up exploring the forests behind my neighborhood, fueled by the energy of icons like Steve Irwin and a deep-seated love for our National Parks. I didn’t just want to watch those stories; I wanted to live them. I wanted to know the "why" behind the world we see.

My curiosity led me out of the backyard and into the field. I spent years serving in AmeriCorps NCCC and working as a Wildland Firefighter and Forestry Technician, protecting the very landscapes I once dreamed of exploring.

Those years in the forest gave me a "boots on the ground" perspective on ecology and human history that you just can't get from a classroom. After eight years of calling Calabash home, I've had the pleasure of learning how deep the history goes throughout Brunswick County! From my time working at Indigo Farms to learning the community over the past decade, I’ve seen the grit and heart that makes this place special.

I founded Calabash Historic Walking Tours to make sure those stories don’t get paved over. I’m bringing my research, my field experience, and my local roots to the pavement to show you a side of this town you’ve never seen before. It’s personal, it’s fun, and it’s a story I can’t wait to share with you.

Prepare for Your Expedition

The Waiver

(Safety First!)

Once you book your tour, you will receive a confirmation email containing our digital waiver. Please print and sign this waiver and bring with you on the day of the tour. If you’re unable to print it, don’t worry—I will have copies available at the starting point, but arriving with yours pre-signed helps us get off the pavement and into the story even faster!

What to Expect

This isn’t a dry lecture or a slow shuffle between buildings. It’s an immersive, active experience designed to get your heart rate up and your mind moving. We explore the "Seafood Capital of the World" through three lenses:

  • Systems Thinking: We’ll look at how our maritime roots and agricultural history created the unique culture we see today.

  • Hidden Narratives: We’re going off the postcards to discover the "real" Calabash—the ghosts, the duels, and the grit.

  • Community Spirit: You aren't just a tourist; by walking with us, you are actively supporting the mission to keep the "Old Calabash" spirit alive.

Trek Details

  • Distance: 3 miles ~ 1 hour

  • Pace: We move at a steady, conversational walking pace. We aren't running, but we are staying active!

  • WAIVER: DID YOU COMPLETE THE WAIVER?

  • Terrain: Mostly flat pavement and boardwalks, with occasional transitions.

Expedition Gear List

To make sure you have the best experience, please come prepared with the following:

  • Footwear: Comfortable walking or running shoes are a must. No flip-flops, please!

  • Hydration: Bring a reusable water bottle. Staying hydrated is key in the Lowcountry heat.

  • Sun Protection: A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are highly recommended.

  • Small Backpack: Great for carrying your water, snacks, and your signed waiver.

  • Curiosity: Bring an open mind and your best questions!

Thank you so much and I can't wait to see you there!!!
